During December 2023, severe storms and heavy rainfall wreaked havoc on the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim regions. This disaster inflicted significant damage on numerous homes and families. The torrential rainfall led to flash flooding, landslides, strong winds, fallen trees, and widespread power outages. The cleanup efforts following this calamity necessitated exceptional support from numerous volunteers.
Our volunteers dedicated a total of 7,501 hours to clearing debris from residences, commercial establishments, and farms. They performed high-pressure washing and thorough cleaning, providing assistance to livestock and agricultural lands. Additionally, they tackled the cleanup of green waste, often requiring the use of chainsaws. Collectively, our volunteers removed an impressive 60,560 kilograms of green waste and aided a total of 57 properties.
An elderly widow who owned a property in Guanaba, where many trees were snapped off or uprooted, was at a loss as to how she could restore her property to its original state. Her land, where her horse used to graze and roam freely, served as a constant reminder of the devastation. After reaching out to the council, she was connected with Global Care Australia. We met with the women and inspected her property; we assured her that we would handle the clean-up. Over three days, with one Positrack loader, two people on chainsaws and two people on brushcutters, we were able to give the most incredible outcome. Her response was:
“The kindness of these people and Global Care has given me the strength to keep going. I am overwhelmed by the generosity and care they have given me. My faith is stronger.”
