Murwillumbah Impact Report 2022

Murwillumbah is located on the Tweed River in the lush Northern Rivers region of NSW.

Over the years, the region has experienced a series of severe flood events. To mitigate the impact of flooding on the township, residents have been protected by a number of levees. Some of the worst floods on record occurred in 1954, 1974, 2017, and 2022. Last year, one of the worst flood events in Australia’s modern history wiped Murwillumbah out.

Like many homes and businesses, ConXions Church was affected by the flood. Despite significant damage to their own facility, volunteers from the local operation were mobilized to assist affected residents. In the months following the disaster, the local operation offered clean-up assistance, cooked 100 meals, distributed 90 food and hygiene packs, and gave away $200 in food vouchers. Later in 2022, the local operation purchased household items and sleeping bags for rough sleepers. To close out the year, ConXions Church partnered with Queensland Health and a local Real Estate agency to donate Christmas hampers for families.

A year on from the flood, many locals are struggling with the housing crisis. The local operation has responded to this need. A $2500 grant has been acquired to purchase temporary shelters for the growing homeless population. Moving into the future, this local Global Care operation will continue to love and serve the changing needs of their vulnerable community.
